An Act concerning special license plates for certain members of State boards and commissions and supplementing chapter 3 of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes.

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

    1. a. Upon the application of a person who is appointed to be a public member of a permanent State board or commission, the Division of Motor Vehicles shall issue special license plates for a vehicle owned or leased by the applicant. The special plates shall contain a design developed by the director, which shall be in addition to the markings or identification otherwise required by law. For the purposes of this act, "a permanent State board or commission" means an entity which is intended to be of permanent or indefinite duration as established by the terms of the resolution, executive order, statute or proclamation creating the entity. For the purposes of this act, "public member" means a person other than an officer or employee of a governmental entity or agency. A member shall not use the special plates on a motor vehicle other than the vehicle for which they were issued.

    b. The director is authorized to charge a fee of $25 for the issuance of the special plates in addition to the fees otherwise required by law.

    c. The special plates shall be returned to the Division of Motor Vehicles within 30 days after the person to whom they were issued ceases to be a member of the board or commission.

    2. This act shall take effect on the first day of the seventh month after enactment.

STATEMENT

    This bill authorizes the Division of Motor Vehicles to issue special license plates to public members of permanent State boards or commissions. The special plates would be of a design developed by the Director of the Division of Motor Vehicles.

    The bill also authorizes the director to charge a fee of $25 for the special plates in addition to the other fees required by law.
