SENATE, No. 773

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

INTRODUCED FEBRUARY 15, 1996

By Senator BUBBA

An Act eliminating the application fee for firefighter I certification and supplementing P.L.1983, c.382 (C.52:27D-25a et seq.).

Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

    1. Notwithstanding the provisions of any law, rule or regulation to the contrary, no application fee shall be charged by the Department of Community Affairs, Division of Fire Safety for the application for firefighter I certification.

    2. This act shall take effect immediately.

STATEMENT

This bill eliminates the $5 fee imposed upon firefighters applying for certification as firefighter I. Regulations promulgated by the Division of Fire Safety in the Department of Community Affairs currently require this fee. Firefighters may apply for certification as firefighter I after completing a training course or 18 months of service, meeting certain other requirements, and paying the $5 fee. Firefighter I certification is required as a prerequisite for more advanced training programs. This bill would eliminate this fee imposed upon firefighters, many of whom generously donate their private time to improve their firefighting skills and thus better protect the public.
