STATE OF NEW JERSEY

INTRODUCED MARCH 21, 1996

By Senator BENNETT

An Act concerning the sale of alcoholic beverages and supplementing Title 33 of the Revised Statutes.

Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

    1. The sale of alcoholic beverages is prohibited in any building or on other property owned by or under the control of the New Jersey Transit Corporation. This act shall not apply to an establishment located in a building or on other property of the corporation for which a valid permit or license to sell alcoholic beverages has been issued by the State of New Jersey or other issuing authority prior to the effective date of this act.

    2. This act shall take effect immediately.

STATEMENT

This bill would prohibit the New Jersey Transit Corporation from renting or leasing space in its train stations or other facilities to establishments which sell alcoholic beverages. Such establishments tend to attract patronage away from existing local businesses and may be detrimental to the quality of life in the neighborhoods where the stations are located. Existing establishments would be exempted from the provisions of this bill.
