SENATE LAW AND PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

SENATE, No. 1008

with committee amendments

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: JUNE 6, 1996

The Senate Law and Public Safety Committee reports without recommendation Senate Bill No. 1008 with committee amendments.

Currently, a leave of absence with pay is given to every police officer or firefighter who is a duly authorized representative of certain specified organizations to attend any State or national convention of the organization. The leave of absence is for the duration of the convention with a reasonable time allowed for travel to and from the convention. This bill adds the Emerald Society to that list of organizations.

The committee amended the bill to include county and municipal police officers and firefighters. As introduced, the bill allowed the paid leave of absence only for Emerald Society members who were subject to the provisions of Title 11A (Civil Service).
