STATE OF NEW JERSEY

INTRODUCED MAY 2, 1996

By Senator EWING

An Act concerning employees of boards of education and amending N.J.S.18A:31-2.

Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

    1. N.J.S.18A:31-2 is amended to read as follows:

18A:31-2. Whenever any full-time teaching staff member of any board of education of any local school district or regional school district or of a county vocational school or any secretary, or office clerk applies to the board of education by which he is employed for permission to attend the annual convention of the New Jersey Education Association, such permission shall be granted for a period of not more than two days in any one year [and he shall receive his whole salary for the days of actual attendance upon the sessions of such convention upon filing with the secretary of the board a certificate of such attendance signed by the executive secretary of the association]. This absence shall be considered leave without pay, unless the individual elects to utilize for this purpose such personal days as he might have available.

(cf: N.J.S.18A:31-2)

    2. This act shall take effect immediately.

STATEMENT

This bill eliminates the provision that employees of boards of education are entitled to attend the NJEA annual convention for up to two days with full pay. The employees would still have to be given permission to attend the convention, however, the absence either would be leave without pay or the employee could use personal leave for this purpose.

Eliminates leave for board employees to attend NJEA convention with full pay.
