STATE OF NEW JERSEY

An Act concerning motor vehicles and providing for the issuance of special commemorative license plates.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1.    a. Notwithstanding any provision of Title 39 of the Revised Statutes to the contrary, the Director of the Division of Motor Vehicles is authorized to issue a special license plate commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the New Jersey State Police. The license plate shall be of such design as shall be submitted to the director by the State Police and as shall be approved by him, including such markings or identification otherwise prescribed by law.

    b. Except as provided in this act, the special commemorative license plates shall not be sold or otherwise be made commercially available and shall be issued to the State Police to be displayed on any State Police motor vehicle to be marked as State property.

    c.    The special commemorative plates shall be displayed 1[from the date of their issuance to February 1, 1997] for one year from the effective date of this legislation1.

    d.    The Director of the Division of Motor Vehicles is authorized to transmit such special commemorative plates, upon their surrender, to the Former Troopers Association1[, donating the funding for such special commemorative license plates]1. The Association is authorized to retain such plates for disposition to its members and members of the State Police on active duty, in such manner and on such terms as 1[it]1 shall 1[decide] be determined by the Superintendent of State Police in consultation with the Director of the Division of Motor Vehicles1.

    e.    Any monetary donation by the Former Troopers Association made available to the State, which specifies the sponsorship of the issuance of the special commemorative license plates, shall be accepted by the director on behalf of the State 1[and distributed for motor vehicle purposes. Any such monetary donation shall be included in the annual appropriations act and distributed in the same manner as other appropriations] to defray the cost of administration, design and production of the commemorative license plate1.

 

    2. This act shall take effect immediately and shall expire 1[February 1, 1997] one year from the effective date1.
