STATEMENT

This bill provides a supplemental appropriation of $6 million to the Paterson Public School District. The budget proposed by the Paterson State District Superintendent for the 1996-97 school year includes budget reductions which may result in the elimination of approximately 300 staff positions. The proposed reduction is caused by a combination of a loss in federal funding, reduction in fund balances, negotiated salary increases, and increases in tuition costs. The $6 million State appropriation will be used to provide additional revenues to the Paterson School District to offset some of the proposed budget reductions.
