An Act exempting books from the sales and use tax, amending P.L.1980, c.105.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. Section 17 of P.L.1980 c.105 (c.54:32B-8.5) is amended to read as follows:

    17. Receipts from sales of newspapers, magazines [and], periodicals and books are exempt from the tax imposed under the Sales and Use Tax Act.

    2. This act shall take effect on the first day of the third month following its enactment.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

    This bill provides for a sales and use tax exemption for the retail purchase of books. With newspapers, magazines and periodicals exempt from the sales tax, the reading public deserve to be able to purchase a book to educate themselves, read for enjoyment, how-to build something, etc. without having to be taxed on this knowledge.
