SENATE LAW AND PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

SENATE, No. 1260

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: JUNE 13, 1996

The Senate Law and Public Safety Committee reports favorably Senate Bill No. 1260.

This bill appropriates $5 million in bond funds to the Juvenile Justice Commission in the Department of Law and Public Safety for the construction of a 48-bed housing unit and a gymnasium/visitors facility at the New Jersey Training School for Boys (NJTSB). These monies were provided under the "Public Purpose Buildings and Community-Based Facilities Construction Bond Act of 1989."

It is the committee's understanding that the NJTSB currently houses 475 juvenile inmates, which is 19 percent over its capacity.
