SENATE LAW AND PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

SENATE, No. 1282

with committee amendments

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: JANUARY 23, 1997

The Senate Law and Public Safety Committee reports favorably and with committee amendments Senate Bill No. 1282.

As amended and released by the committee, this bill would provide for the issuance of license plates for motor vehicles owned or leased by former members of the Legislature who served in either or both houses for a minimum of 10 years. The plates would identify the holder as a former member of either the Senate or the General Assembly and contain the Shield of the State of New Jersey. If the former member served in both the Senate and the Assembly, the plates would identify the former member as a senator. The Director of the Division of Motor Vehicles would design the plate, subject to approval by the President of the Senate and Speaker of the General Assembly. The director also would establish a fee, sufficient to defray the cost of producing and distributing the plates, which would be in addition to fees currently required for regular plates.

The committee amended the bill to require the former member to have served in the Legislature for 10 years. The committee also amended the bill to provide if a member had served in both houses, that member would receive license plates for former senators.
