This bill restores $257,000 in funding to the FY 1997 budget for the New Jersey Historical Commission. For nearly thirty years the New Jersey Historical Commission has provided a wide variety of New Jersey history services to a broad spectrum of New Jersey’s citizens and their historical, educational, and other cultural organizations. The historical commission has helped to establish and maintain a Statewide history education and outreach network for the benefit of historical and other educational and cultural organizations, schools, colleges, and universities, and the general public in such areas as colonial and Revolutionary history, African American history, ethnic history, women’s history, and services to teachers and the personnel of local historical organizations. Funds restored to the Commission for FY 1997 will enable it to continue its program of services and publication support at the same level for the State’s towns and local, county, and Statewide historical, cultural, and educational organizations, and to assist through its grant programs the efforts of other to present and promote New Jersey history.
