An Act concerning special license plates for certain nonprofit organizations and amending P.L.1987, c.374.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. Section 1 of P.L.1987, c. 374 (C.39:3-27.35) is amended to read as follows:

    1. A person who is a member in good standing of a nonprofit community, alumni or service organization in the State approved by the director pursuant to the provisions of this act may be issued special organization vehicle registration plates to be displayed on motor vehicles owned or leased by that person in place of standard registration plates.

    The surviving spouse of a former member in good standing of a nonprofit community, alumni or service organization in the State approved by the director pursuant to the provisions of this act, who is eligible to operate a motor vehicle in this State under the provision of R.S.39:3-10, may retain the special plates obtained by the deceased spouse pursuant to this section for display on a motor vehicle registered to or leased by the surviving spouse under the provisions of R.S.39:3-4.

    2. This act shall take effect on the first day of the sixth month after enactment. .

 

 

STATEMENT

 

    This bill would allow the surviving spouse of a former member of a nonprofit, community, alumni or service organization to retain the special license plates obtained by the member while the member was in good standing with the organization. Surviving spouses of members of organizations such as the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association would be able to continue to proudly display the organization's special license plates.
