SENATE, No. 1645

      Senate Bill No. 1645 of 1996 would reinstate and increase the annual fee for reflectorized motor vehicle registration plates. The original fee of $0.40 for such plates was established pursuant to section 2 of P.L.1989, c.202 (C.39:3-33.9); however, that law had a sunset provision which terminated the fee effective July 1, 1996. This bill would reinstate and increase the fee to $0.60, and would not provide for a termination date.

      Based on revenue data provided by the Division of Motor Vehicles, the $0.40 fee for reflectorized motor vehicle registration plates generated about $2.4 million annually. Increasing the fee by 50 percent from $0.40 to $0.60 should result in additional revenue of $1.2 million.
