LEGISLATIVE FISCAL ESTIMATE TO

[First Reprint]

SENATE, No. 1718

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: FEBRUARY 6, 1997

Senate Bill No. 1718 (1R) of 1996 authorizes the Director of the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to issue special license plates with the word "VETERAN" to former members of the armed forces who have been honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances. A fee of $25 would be charged for these special plates which is in addition to fees otherwise required by law. Under current law, special veterans' plates are only issued to veterans who are affiliated with a veterans' organization.

The Office of Legislative Services (OLS) cannot determine how many veterans who are not members of veterans' organizations would be interested in purchasing special "VETERAN" license plates. However, based on costs for other special license plate bills, OLS would estimate a cost of about $1,500 for a new plate die and costs of $10 to $15 to produce each set of special plates.

This legislative fiscal estimate has been produced by the Office of Legislative Services due to the failure of the Executive Branch to respond to our request for a fiscal note.

This fiscal estimate has been prepared pursuant to P.L.1980, c.67.
