An Act concerning eligible lists for police officers and supplementing Title 11A of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. Notwithstanding the provisions of any law or regulation to the contrary, a person on an eligible list for the position of police officer in a city of the first class with a population exceeding 250,000, according to the 1990 decennial census, who has completed phases of the certification process and is awaiting appointment as a police officer shall, upon expiration of that eligibility list, be granted first priority on any new eligibility list established for that position.

 

    2. This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

    This bill is intended to protect certain persons who have qualified as eligible for appointment as police officer and have completed phases of the certification process in the event that the civil service hiring list on which they have been placed expires. The bill would grant such persons who were on an eligibility list in a city of the first class with a population exceeding 250,000, according to the 1990 decennial census, priority on any new employment list established for that position.
