SENATE, No. 1845

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

INTRODUCED MARCH 3, 1997

By Senator MATHEUSSEN

An Act designating the month of November in each year as "American Pride and Patriotism Month" in New Jersey.

Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

    1. The Legislature finds and declares:

    a. The United States of America is a country with a rich and glorious history and a country in which its citizens take great pride in its accomplishments and heritage.

    b. The month of November is unique in the national calendar because it contains two significant national holidays: Veterans' Day, on the 11th, and Thanksgiving, on the fourth Thursday of the month.

    c. Veterans' Day is of continuing importance because, while it was first designated as the day to honor the veterans of World War One, it now is the day to honor the bravery, dedication and sacrifices of the veterans of all wars and conflicts in which this country has been involved.

    d. Thanksgiving is the national day to give thanks to Providence for the natural abundance of and many blessings bestowed on this nation throughout its history.

    e. Pride in this country's heritage and in the men and women who served in its armed forces in time of war or other emergency and the desire to acknowledge its natural blessings are virtues that should be nurtured and encouraged in our schools and society as a whole.

    f. It is fitting and proper for this State government to promote pride in and awareness of our country's heritage and patriotism by designating the month of November as "American Pride and Patriotism Month" in New Jersey.

    2. The month of November in each year is designated as "American Pride and Patriotism Month" in the State of New Jersey.

    3. The Governor shall issue annually a proclamation designating this month as "American Pride and Patriotism Month." All citizens of this State as well as public and private organizations, including every public school district, are urged to recognize "American Pride and Patriotism Month" with appropriate observances.

    4. This act shall take effect immediately.
