STATEMENT

This bill appropriates $100,000 to the Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife to buy additional rolls of deer fencing for distribution to farmers to help control deer encroachment on crops.

Crop losses on New Jersey farms caused by deer herds are enormous. In recent years, the Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife has annually provided approximately 350 rolls of deer fencing, at a cost of about $21,000, to eligible farmers to help combat this problem. Since this fencing has proven effective in controlling deer access to crops, the demand for it now exceeds 1,750 rolls and has resulted in a waiting list of four years. The supplemental appropriation would enable the division to purchase additional fencing to meet this demand.
