An Act concerning judicial and legislative salaries, amending N.J.S. 2B:2-4 and P.L.1948, c.16.

 

    Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

    1. N.J.S.2B:2-4 is amended to read as follows:

    2B:2-4. Judicial Salaries. a. Annual salaries of justices and judges, effective July 1, 1998, shall be:

    Chief Justice of the Supreme Court         [ $138,000] $143,000

 

    Associate Justice of the Supreme Court     [132,250] $137,250

    Judge of the Superior Court ,

      Appellate Division            [124,200] $129,200

    Judge of the Superior Court,

      Assignment Judge             [120,750] $125,750

    Judge of the Superior Court;

      Judge of the Tax Court     [115,000] $120,000.

      b. Annual salaries of justices and judges, effective July 1, 1999, shall be:

    Chief Justice of the Supreme Court          $148,000

 

    Associate Justice of the Supreme Court     $142,250

    Judge of the Superior Court ,

      Appellate Division            $134,200

    Judge of the Superior Court,

      Assignment Judge             $130,750

    Judge of the Superior Court;

      Judge of the Tax Court     $125,000.

      c. Annual salaries of justices and judges, effective July 1, 2000 and thereafter, shall be:

    Chief Justice of the Supreme Court          $153,000

 

    Associate Justice of the Supreme Court     $147,250

    Judge of the Superior Court ,

      Appellate Division            $139,200

    Judge of the Superior Court,

      Assignment Judge             $135,750

    Judge of the Superior Court;

      Judge of the Tax Court     $130,000.

    2. Section 1 of P.L.1948, c.16 (C.52:10A-1) is amended to read as follows:

    1. Members of the Senate and General Assembly shall receive annually, during the term for which they shall have been elected and while they shall hold their office, compensation in the sum of $25,000.00 beginning with the 1984 legislative year, and compensation in the sum of $35,000.00 beginning with the 1990 legislative year, and compensation in the sum of $45,000.00 beginning with the 2000 legislative year and thereafter. The President of the Senate and the Speaker of the General Assembly, each by virtue of his office, shall receive an additional allowance, equal to 1/3 of his compensation as a member. The compensation herein provided shall be paid to each member upon his qualifying into office as such member, and the additional allowance herein provided to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the General Assembly shall be paid upon his qualifying into office as such officer.

    3. This act shall take effect immediately .

 

 

STATEMENT

 

    This bill increases the annual salaries of Supreme Court justices and Superior Court judges.

    It would provide for an initial increase of $5,000 effective July 1, 1998 and additional $5,000 increases effective July 1, 1999 and July 1, 2000.

    In addition, the bill increases legislative salaries from $35,000 to $45,000 beginning in the 2000 legislative year.
