SENATE STATE GOVERNMENT COMMITTEE
STATEMENT TO
SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. 77
with committee amendments
STATE OF NEW JERSEY
DATED: MARCH 3, 1997
The Senate State Government Committee reports favorably Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 77.
This concurrent resolution proposes to amend the New Jersey Constitution to permit a portion of any State lottery prize money that is unclaimed one year after a drawing to be used to fund part or all of the funeral costs of police officers killed in the line of duty whenever such officers are not covered, in whole or in part, by some type of life insurance, other than credit life insurance.
Current State law provides that unclaimed lottery prize money may be used only for State institutions and State aid for education, for augmenting prize money and for administrative expenses in operating the lottery.
COMMITTEE AMENDMENTS
The committee amended the bill to provide that part of the unclaimed lottery prize money may be used to fund part or all of the funeral costs of police officers killed in the line of duty whenever such officers are not covered, in whole or in part, by some type of life insurance, other than credit life insurance.
