SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. 87

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

INTRODUCED JULY 25, 1996

By Senator MATHEUSSEN

A Concurrent Resolution memorializing the House of Representatives to adopt House Resolution 234 of 1993 concerning the designation of certain physicians as primary care physicians.

Whereas, For a majority of woman between the ages of 15 and 44 their obstetrician-gynecologist is the primary or only physician they see; and

Whereas, Obstetrician-gynecologists provide a wide array of preventive and primary care services to women, such as prenatal and maternity care, family planning, general medical examinations, instruction in breast self-examination, screening and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, identification of domestic violence, screening for breast and cervical cancer, hypertension and cardiovascular surveillance, osteoporosis prevention, and counseling about sexual practices and sexual dysfunction, as well as healthy lifestyles counseling; and

Whereas, Failure to classify obstetrician-gynecologists as primary care physicians would deny women direct access to obstetrician-gynecologists and require them to see the physicians they prefer only on a referral basis; and

Whereas, As Congress begins work on health care reform, it is important to be aware of the crucial role obstetrician-gynecologists play in the delivery of health care to women; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey (the General Assembly concurring):
