SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. 95

 

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

 

INTRODUCED OCTOBER 3, 1996

A Concurrent Resolution commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of Princeton University and recognizing its long and close relationship with the State of New Jersey and its importance to this State and the nation.

 

Whereas, This year, Princeton University in Princeton Borough, Mercer County is celebrating the 250th anniversary of its founding in New Jersey; and

Whereas, Princeton University has had a long and close relationship with the State of New Jersey and a significant place in the history of this State and the nation; and

Whereas, The first session of the New Jersey Legislature was held 220 years ago between August and October of 1776, at the University's historic Nassau Hall; and

Whereas, During the session, the Legislature elected the great American patriot William Livingston as the State's first Governor, provided for troops for General Washington's fledgling army, and enacted laws concerning the State's judiciary and electoral procedure, among other actions; and

Whereas, In the brief time that the Legislature met at Princeton it succeeded in establishing the legal foundation for the modern State of New Jersey; and

Whereas, Since then, the relationship between the State's government and Princeton University has continued to be close and mutually beneficial; and

Whereas, Thousands of the University's alumni have worked in State service and for New Jersey's counties and municipalities and many have served in the State Legislature; and

Whereas, No fewer than 11 alumni have served as Governor of this State with one, Woodrow Wilson, also serving as President of both the University and the United States; and

Whereas, Thousands of the University's alumni have worked in the nation's service, including two Presidents, dozens of federal cabinet officials, hundreds of United States and state legislators and 44 Governors of other states besides New Jersey; and

Whereas, Princeton University is currently one of the world's preeminent educational institutions and it has among its enrollees 615 students from New Jersey, representing every county in the State; and

Whereas, The University enjoys renown as a teaching and research institution that has produced 29 Nobel Prize winners as either faculty or former students; and

Whereas, With 6,300 students and 4,800 permanent employees, Princeton University is the largest private employer in Mercer County and generates nearly $1 billion each year in economic activity and plays a major role in the cultural life of this State; and

Whereas, Each year thousands of University faculty, staff and students work as volunteers in community service throughout the State and region; and

Whereas, Since 1776, the Governor of this State has served as a trustee of the University; and

Whereas, It is fitting and proper that the Legislature commemorate both the 250th anniversary of the founding of the University and recognize its long and close relationship with the State of New Jersey and its importance to this State and the nation; now, therefore,

 

    Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey (the General Assembly concurring):

 

    1. The New Jersey Legislature hereby commemorates the 250th anniversary of the founding of Princeton University and recognizes the long and close relationship between the University and the State of New Jersey and the importance of the University to this State and the nation.

 

    2. A duly authenticated copy of this resolution, signed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the General Assembly and attested by the Secretary of the Senate and the Clerk of the General Assembly, shall be transmitted to the President of Princeton University.

    This concurrent resolution commemorates the 250th anniversary of the founding of Princeton University and recognizes the long and close relationship between the University and the State of New Jersey and the importance of the University to this State and the nation.
