SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION No. 37

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

INTRODUCED OCTOBER 28, 1996

By Senators O’CONNOR, KENNY and Sacco

A Joint Resolution memorializing Congress to actively oppose legislation which reduces Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security spending.

Whereas, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, commonly grouped as the "safety net" programs, are vital to the elderly, disabled and impoverished and have given them dignity and relieved them from the dread of burdening their families; and

Whereas, Senior citizens, the disabled and the impoverished communities fear that the "safety net" programs face future diminishment in the effort to achieve a balanced federal budget in the year 2002; and

Whereas, The New Jersey senior citizen, disabled and impoverished communities have organized in a nonpartisan coalition to guard against any compromises that will impair the "safety net" programs; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

    1. The Congress of the United States is respectfully memorialized to reject reductions in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security as a means to balance the budget by the year 2002.

    2. Duly authenticated copies of this joint resolution shall be transmitted to the presiding officers of the Congress of the United States and each member of New Jersey's Congressional delegation.

    3. This joint resolution shall take effect immediately.
