SENATE RESOLUTION No. 101

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

INTRODUCED JUNE 23, 1997

By Senator BENNETT

A Senate Resolution recognizing July 3, 1997 as "Cost of Government Day" for the calendar year 1997.

Whereas, Americans are the most energetic, creative, innovative and entrepreneurial people on earth; and

Whereas, Our citizens can be the most competitive if their federal government is wise enough to lift from them the burdens of over-taxation, over-regulation, and over-spending that hamper our economy and threaten to mortgage our children's future; and

Whereas, The third day of July, 1997, marks Cost of Government Day for 1997, the date in this calendar year on which the average American has earned enough in gross income to pay the per capita cost of government-imposed obligations, including liability for direct and indirect taxes and the cost of government regulation; and

Whereas, The total cost of government in 1997 is estimated at $3,519 billion, up from $3,375 billion in 1996; and

Whereas, For the last four years, the Americans for Tax Reform Foundation has been fulfilling its mission to identify Cost of Government Day and to highlight, through the national media and public forums, the need to reduce the size and spending of our federal government; and

Whereas, If America cuts taxes and wasteful federal spending, not only will our country's hard-working entrepreneurs have greater incentive to earn more, but there will be greater venture capital to propel our nation into the 21st century; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

    1. The Senate of the State of New Jersey hereby recognizes July 3, 1997 as Cost of Government Day in New Jersey and the nation and urges all citizens of this State to take notice of the importance of this day and participate with all Americans in its observance.

    2. A duly authenticated copy of this resolution, signed by the President of the Senate and attested by the Secretary of the Senate, shall be transmitted to the Americans for Tax Reform Foundation in Washington, D.C.
