SENATE RESOLUTION No. 32

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

INTRODUCED MARCH 18, 1996

By Senator LaROSSA

A Senate Resolution condemning the recent Hamas attacks on Israeli citizens and calling on Yasir Arafat to help bring responsible members of Hamas to justice.

Whereas, A result of four recent attacks on Israeli civilians by the Muslim extremist group Hamas, 70 innocent people have lost their lives, including two fine young Americans; and

Whereas, The most recent of the attacks was particularly disturbing because it occurred on the Jewish holiday of Purim, a holiday celebrating the deliverance of the Jews from Persia; and

Whereas, That attack resulted in school children dressed in costumes to celebrate the holiday being literally blown apart by the explosion; and

Whereas, Two of the attacks involved buses with the number 18, which is symbolic of Chai, the Hebrew word for life; and

Whereas, The members of Hamas who were responsible for these heinous actions must be brought to justice; and

Whereas, If President Yasir Arafat of the Palestinian Authority wants the Palestinian people to be accepted as a responsible nation in the modern world, he must use his position to put a final end to this senseless violence; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of New Jersey:

      1. This House condemns the recent attacks on Israeli citizens by members of Hamas and calls upon President Yasir Arafat of the Palestinian Authority to help bring the responsible members of Hamas to justice.

      2. A duly authenticated copy of this resolution, signed by the President of the Senate and attested by the Secretary thereof, shall be transmitted to President Yasir Arafat.
