SENATE TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE

STATEMENT TO

SENATE RESOLUTION No. 50

STATE OF NEW JERSEY

DATED: MAY 15,1997

The Senate Transportation Committee reports favorably Senate Resolution No. 50.

This Senate Resolution urges the Secretary of Transportation of the United States Department of Transportation to grant an exemption to the State of New Jersey from the federal statutory requirement mandating truck access to certain highways in the State. Several highways which are a part of the federal primary system in this State are essentially local roadways and are not suitable for a high volume of truck traffic. The high volume of truck traffic on these highways, many of which are two-lane undivided highways, has led to traffic congestion, difficult driving conditions and dangerous situations as several of these highways are also school bus routes. The grant of the exemption would give the Commissioner of Transportation of the State of New Jersey enhanced authority to direct truck traffic to those portions of the State highway system which are better suited for high volume truck traffic.
