By Senator LIPMAN

A Senate Resolution designating August 26, 1996 as "Women's Equality Day" in recognition of the ratification of the 19th amendment to the United States Constitution and commending the Alice Paul Centennial Foundation, Inc.

Whereas, On August 26, 1920, Tennessee became the necessary 36th state to ratify the 19th amendment to the United States Constitution granting women the right to vote; and

Whereas, It is crucial that the importance of this date in the struggle for equal rights and women's suffrage be remembered and celebrated in New Jersey; and

Whereas, It is also crucial that the leaders of the women's suffrage movement, especially Alice Paul, be remembered for their fight for justice and equality; and

Whereas, Alice Paul, the architect of some of the most outstanding political achievements for women in the early 20th century, was born to Quaker parents and spent her childhood in Mount Laurel, New Jersey; and

Whereas, Alice Paul founded the National Women's Party to obtain women's suffrage and wrote the Equal Rights Amendment and the equal rights statement that appeared in the United Nations Charter; and

Whereas, Alice Paul and the members of the National Women's Party revitalized the suffrage movement with marches, White House pickets and rallies; and

Whereas, Alice Paul wrote and campaigned for the non-discrimination clause of the 1964 Civil Rights Act that extended civil rights protection to women; and

Whereas, Alice Paul's home, "Paulsdale," was named a National Historic Landmark, the only such landmark dedicated to a woman in New Jersey; and

Whereas, It is fitting and proper that ratification of the 19th amendment to the United States Constitution be remembered, honored and celebrated and that the Alice Paul Centennial Foundation, Inc. be commended for its activities; now, therefore,
